When the Croce family inherited the farm from their parents, they changed the name to Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza. They decided early on to make the space sustainable for both people and the environment. The bob-o-link bird, whose habitat and migration routes were threatened by deforestation, one-sided cultivation of soybeans and corn, became a symbol that something had to be done. The family immediately banned all types of substances harmful to the environment, created "green corridors" for wildlife and preserved all water sources in the area. They started to grow more different plants, such as banana, avocado, mango and passion fruit, which together with the healthy forest made the area's flora and fauna stronger as a whole. Not only the vegetation and animals of the area benefit from the improved conditions, but also the coffee trees that thrive among other vegetation. Pretty quickly, the family realized that even though they were doing everything they could to improve the environment around them, it would have very little effect if the neighbors carried on as before. Therefore, they decided to try to extend their philosophy to the producers of the region as well. This is how a network of producers was born, where everyone has the ambition to produce high-quality coffee, but also the commitment to take care of nature. FAF assists producers in many ways. They provide guidance with harvesting techniques and tree care, but also provide financial assistance if necessary. The network grows year by year, as more and more producers see the benefits of the work. Both for nature's sake, but also because they get better pay for their coffee, which creates sustainability for families as well.
